가을 날 오후, 한적한 길거리를
키 작은 할아버지가
발을 끌면서 홀로 걷고 있네요.
가을 잎을 보고 할아버지는 또 한 번 보낸 여름을 생각합니다.
할아버지는 기나 긴 외로운 밤을 보내면서, 유월을 기다리고 있지요.
고아원 근처 나뭇잎 사이로 삐져 나온 종이 조각이
할아버지 시선을 잡아 끌었습니다.
떨리는 손으로 몸을 굽히고 할아버지는 종이 조각을 집어 들었어요.
어린 아이 필체의 메모를 읽자 마자,
할아버지는 그만 울기 시작합니다.
그 내용이 낙인처럼 할아버지 마음에 찍혀 버렸거든요.
“누구든지 이 쪽지를 보는 사람을 사랑해요.
누구든지 이 쪽지를 보는 사람이 제게 필요해요.
제 말을 들어 줄 사람이 아무도 없거든요.

할아버지는 두 눈을 크게 뜨고, 그 아이의 집을 찾다가,
자기 코를 유리창에 꾹 밀어 붙이고 있는 한 아이를 보게 되었어요.

할아버지는 그 소녀에게 손을 흔들고 미소를 지었습니다.
